Do I need a font license for my ePub or App?

Desktop License

The desktop license is for anyone who needs fonts (.otf) installed on their Windows or Mac OS machine. The desktop license allow font embedding in documents for personal or internal business use. Typical case: create a pdf.

But if you have to deliver to third parties your “ePub” or “application” who feature embedded fonts or subsets of the fonts for a commercial purpose, you will need a specific license and in certain cases specific font formats (.woff or .woff2), different from the usual OpenType format (.otf) that you can install on your computer.

  • ePub: One license by digital publication, digital book built with an interactive pdf, ePub 2.01, EPub3, KF8, AWZ formats. In such contexts, the fonts are used to display content, in some case minimal content (iself set in a font) interaction. Fontfiles can be installed on the computer used to design and produce the ePub.

  • App: One license by application and usage: applications downloadable from mobile platforms such as iOS (iPhone/iPad), Android, Windows Phone and Amazon App-Shop. Generally it’s the fonts used for the interface or certain functionnality of the application. License granted for a limited time and renewable one month before expiration date or perpetual license or limited to the number of years specified during purchase. Fontfiles can be installed on the computer used to design and produce the App.
